"On Feb. 2, 1961, several months after they met, Obama's parents got married in Maui, according to divorce records. It was a Thursday. At that point, Ann was three months pregnant with Barack Obama II. Friends did not learn of the wedding until afterward."

Obama has been very upfront about this fact, even going out of his way to remind reporters of the fact when he reminds them that his campaign will not attack family (especially children) of other candidates.
What the media has done with this story is one thing, but I don't think Obama or his staff have acted inappropriately in any way.

The media is raking her over the coals because of her staunch views on abstinence-only education, NOT because her teenage daughter is pregnant. Reasonable people understand that it can happen in the best of families, so to deny that comprehensive sex education is crucially important has left her open to criticism especially since she was unable to influence her own child. Abistence only birth control only works when one is abstinent.
In response to Nancy's comment, Sarah Palin has influenced her daughter by passing her pro-life values to her. Her daughter has decided to keep her baby and marry the father which is the "proper" thing to do. If she had decided to abort the baby the left would have more basis for their position that she hadn't passed along her beliefs.
It is difficult/impossible for parents to control everything their teenage children do unless they keep them under lock and key 24 7 365. Teenagers make bad choices, it's part of growing up and it is not always the parents fault. People choose to do things that they know is wrong for various reasons. It's the parents job to teach their children right from wrong but parents are not capable of ensuring children follow those rules.

I agree with much of what you say. Parents can only control so much. But how can you deny that had Bristol been aware of birth control options, than her "bad choice" to engage in premarital sex might not have ended up in a teenage pregnancy? Another "proper" decision, or "choice" might have been to carry the baby and give it up for adoption. I wonder if that was considered.
You say "It's the parents job to teach their children right from wrong". Isn't teaching the same thing as educating? In driver's ed, you are not simply taught "don't get into accidents", you are taught many ways of avoiding accidents. Would you consider the former to be a better model for teaching children to drive than the latter? If you can acknowledge that children don't always listen to the advice, or observe the morals of their parents, than why would you not be in support of teaching them all you could about protecting themselves?

I ask, because if you did, and you had conceived a child you would have had to make a decision.
Barack's mother's decision was to marry the father, and have the baby.
So was her sin having sex before marriage? Was it marrying the man who fathered the child? Or was it not having an abortion?
And if you ever had non-marital sex even once then you are nothing but a hypocrite for your post, because the only thing different between you and Barack's mother is that you didn't get pregnant - assuming you haven't had an abortion, or put one of your love children up for adoption.
OOH!!! Obama's Mama. Sarah and Todd Palin eloped. Seven months later they were parents. John and Cindy McCain met at a party, had a whirlwind romance and fell in love, all while John was still married to Carol. OK, let's talk about Obama's Mama.
