LET ME BE CLEAR...

I am not, for one second, defending Scooter Libby. (read my other blogs about the fact that most people do not care about Scooter Libby)

I can't figure out, for the life of me, why he lied to the FBI and lied to the Grand Jury. What was the point? Patrick Fitzgerald even pointed out that it was not against the law for government officials to discuss amongst themselves that Valerie Plame was a CIA agent.

In the information that Patrick Fitzgerald did release, it doesn't seem that Scooter Libby even leaked the information to Robert Novak.

So, why did he lie??

I will not be one of those conservatives who say it's just a technicality and that it's really not that important. OF COURSE IT IS. It's a huge character flaw. Just like with the Clinton scandal. It wasn't about Clinton getting a little in the Oval office. It was about lying about it to a Grand Jury, to the special prosecutor, and to the American people.

If it's proven that Cheney, Bush or anybody else lied to me intentionally to cover up anything, I'll be the first to say IMPEACH 'EM, FIRE 'EM, BURN THEM AT THE STAKE.

But for now, we've got an indictment of Libby. He resigned. And the consequences for his actions are enormous.

* By the way, does it strike anyone as JUST WRONG when you hear that Libby may face 30 years behind bars, yet we have sex offenders, monsters who prey after our children, who walk the streets after maybe a year or two in a jail cell??

WOW! that's really good. I may use this on my show tommorrow. :) Our court system puts more efforts and importance into "saving face" rather than "saving." -- I think you may be right, and that's sad.

Help me understand why Libby is facing up to 30 years of prison for a leak whilst child molestors, killers, etc. get off (pardon the expression) easier?
Granted, what Libby did was harmful to national security and wrong...but worse criminals have gotten away with more.

I agree with you. I can't explain it. It seems harsh, very harsh to me.

However, Libby is in a very high profile position. To think that he would be careless enough to willingly lie to the FBI and to the Grand Jury is really very disappointing, to say the least.

We must, however, understand that the more Valerie Plame's name (or Joe Wilson's wife) was discussed, the more of her cover was blown. Okay - maybe at the time she wasn't "under cover," but to study the kind of work that she did, you have to know that she can never EVER be used again by the
CIA in the capacity that she built her career on.

That's just wrong. Whatever the motivation, it's just wrong.

Robert Novack broke the story. Do we know yet EXACTLY how he found out about Joe Wilson's wife? or how he found out about the "front" company that other CIA agents used.

When you think about it, this story has placed other CIA agents, not just Valerie, in grave danger. Many agents used that company name as a front. Now that the company name is out, many agents are "outed" if you will. CIA agents deal with some very dangerous people.

So, riddle me this --

If a CIA agent, who has used that company name as a front for whatever he or she is/was doing for the CIA -- maybe he/she was a NOC (non official) -- is confronted by the dangerous person they've been working with, and he/she ends up with a bullet in his/her head...then what should the punishment be for ANYONE involved in DISCUSSING outside of the White House the identity of Valerie Plame and the details of her undercover work?

When you think about it, 30 years doesn't seem long enough if the crime of purgery and obstruction of justice ends up directly or indirectly costing someone their life.

Those of us who are longer in tooth than many of your responders know that politicians lie all the time, from the President down to the local alderman.
They just hope they don't get caught.
But with a suspicious press and increasingly contrary constituancies,
most of them are found out immediately. Pond scum, all of them.
