HELP ME REMEMBER
Bowe Bergdahl, a 24-year-old American soldier taken prisoner by the Taliban in Afghanistan last summer, is featured pleading for his freedom in a new video released Wednesday, ABC News reports. The Army private from Idaho, along with three Afghan soldiers, was taken captive on June 30th near the Pakistan border. The video suggests that Bergdahl may still be alive. In the clip, he holds up a newspaper, but the date of the paper's publication is not visable.
What bothers me, of course, is the fact that the Taliban is using this young soldier for propaganda purposes.. BUT what bothers me the most is that we, as Americans, and we, as members of the media, have forgotten all about this man. We reported when he was captured, but what about follow-up stories? Why aren't we keeping this man "top of mind" until he comes home? How often did you see stories of the young women journalists, who worked for Al Gore's media company, (Laura Ling & Euna Lee). They had wondered into Northern Korean territory and were arrested. How long were they there? And the media never let this story die. Is it because they were a part of our elite media group? What about Daniel Pearl? May he certainly be resting in peace, but we were reminded often of his capture and subsequent execution at the hands of these terrorists.
I want to be reminded that this man is still missing. I want to be reminded that we are still at war, and that there is still an enemy hell bent on destroying us.. they're using this soldier who willingly put on that uniform.. who willing put himself in danger for his country. I DON'T WANT TO FORGET THAT... EVER.
